Dr Brian Millis Building
On Friday the 17th of June, The Dr Brian Millis Building was opened at Citipointe Christian College. Named after CHC’s founder and principal, Brian was also Principal of Christian Outreach College Brisbane, as it was formally known, from 1981 to 1985.
In his speech, Brian spoke about his sense of the ‘call of God to Christian education’. A call that had taken him by surprise as it had come out of his obedience, rather than a strong desire to fulfil a role he was asked to perform. This obedience and subsequent ‘call’ was the instrument that later saw Brian answer ‘yes’ to God to pioneer Christian higher education in Australia. We here at CHC are the beneficiaries of that obedience.
Brian reflected on the way God, by divine appointment, had directed the church board’s path in the acquisition of land at Wecker road and how He had made a way for them in the face of many challenges and obstacles in the early days of the school. ‘The school,’ he added, ‘was here because God called it into being – and its heartbeat bears the imprint of the Holy Spirit.’
The challenge he concluded was to be ‘faithful custodian of the gift of God and of a multi-generational heritage.’ A challenge we all have in the gifting and callings of God.
Farewell Anne Fry
Thursday July 14th will mark the end of 21 years of teaching and service by Mrs Anne Fry at Christian Heritage College. For those of you who do not know, Anne has resigned from her position at CHC to pursue God’s calling in the next season of her life.
Before coming to CHC, Anne was a pioneering teacher in Christian schools in Queensland. Anne also knew what it was to be a student. She was one of the initial cohorts of graduates from CHC’s postgraduate programs. Anne has been a pivotal member of CHC staff over her years here particularly in her roles as Pastoral Care and Christian Studies coordinator, positions which have touched most facets at CHC.
In addition to her lecturing at CHC Anne has pioneered many aspects of CHC we now take for granted. She has undertaken the roles of:
The inaugural School of Education and Humanities Practicum Coordinator
The inaugural School of Christian Studies Coordinator (with the School being established to be responsible for the CS units both core and elective
The inaugural Coordinator and facilitator of student support through her innovative programs such as study support, peer mentor groups and specific programs to meet the varied spiritual needs of students through Book Bean and A Quiet Place
Chapel Coordinator
Student Council Liaison
Community life which included the oversight of O Week, Spiritual companioning, Pastoral Care, Valedictory, Presbytery and Graduation
This list of roles are now managed by a number of staff. The fact that Anne held all of these demonstrates her capacity for carrying the mantle God gave her for CHC and her commitment to CHC. In this way Anne also prayed diligently for CHC every Friday and also organised staff devotions for many years.
Anne has made an enormous contribution to CHC both in its early development and in providing a platform for the years to come.
Altogether a life invested wisely in building the kingdom of God in her own life and those with whom she came in contact. She will be missed by many.
Please hold Anne in your prayers as she enjoys her last weeks at CHC.

From 2011, CHC's School of Ministries is offering a new course focussed on the ever increasing importance of Social Justice.
At the core of the Christian justice agenda is love and service in the name of God. The theme of justice runs throughout the biblical witness of God's encounter with His creation, encouraging a life enriched by the values of compassion, mercy, forgiveness and reconciliation.
If Social Justice is an important and growing concern for you, why not enrol to study and become more equipped to carry out God's work. For course details, visit Diploma of Ministry - Social Justice.

CHC Internship Students in Hong Kong
CHC Internship Students in Hong Kong
Education students Rebecca Canas and Nicole Petersen have just returned from a few months in Hong Kong where they were on an internship program at Notre-Dame College.
Rebecca is a 4th year student and she is completing an internship as part of her final year of studies. Nicole is a 4th year student in Education. Between 29th September and 15th November they were receiving six weeks of valuable teaching experience. We caught up with Rebecca in Hong Kong…
What was the purpose of the internship?
We were there to assist students in developing the speaking, listening and writing skills in the English language. Furthermore, we were also furthering our teaching skills by acquiring strategies that assist in catering and teaching ESL students as we were engrossed in the Chinese culture and the perspective from which these students come from in regards to learning, social aspects, classroom behaviour etc.
What did you hope to achieve?
Pedagogically: I hoped to acquire skills and strategies for teaching ESL students. There are possibilities that I may have students in my future classrooms (in Australia or wherever God leads me) that speak English as a second language and to be able to teach them with a bit of experience under my belt is fantastic. Teaching students another language is a completely different field to what I am used to so it is an amazing opportunity to acquire those skills. I would also like to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Asian cultures and how this impacts the students’ learning. I feel that to be able to know the perspective and culture from which foreign students come from will greatly enhance and inform my future teaching practices.
Culturally: I wanted to be fully immersed in the Chinese/Hong Kong way of teaching learning and living. I have always loved traveling and embracing new cultures as I feel it broadens my worldview. It was so amazing to be able to see the vast difference in culture and people from Australia and Hong Kong, yet at the same time to be certain that we are all created in God’s image. To witness all of these things first hand was an amazing opportunity. This was certainly an experience that not many uni students can have for internship.
Would you recommend it to other students?
My short answer to that question is… Yes, I would recommend this Hong Kong experience to other students! After completing 6 weeks in Hong Kong teaching ESL students I would, without a doubt, recommend that other students undertake this same adventure. To be able to teach in a completely different cultural setting will completely broaden your teaching skills, perspectives and strategies. It has made me come to appreciate the different ways of teaching in other cultures and our own Australian culture. I have also been able to develop an awareness of the specific needs of ESL learners and how to cater for them. It was such a blessing to build positive teacher-student relationships with the students at Notre Dame College. Both the staff and students were very friendly and welcoming to both of us.
This Hong Kong experience has enabled me to not only grow as a teacher but also as a person. I know that the fun times along with the challenging (and this experience will certainly contain both) will build my character and life experiences. I consider myself very blessed to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Hong Kong internship.
Cr Adrian Schrinner visits CHC
Cr Adrian Schrinner is Councillor for Chandler Ward (CHC is located in this ward).
Adrian is the Chairman of the Finance and Economic Development Committee and is a member of Civic Cabinet, together with the Lord Mayor and the six other committee chairs. This committee oversees the financial management of Australia's largest Council. A key part of this role is assisting the Lord Mayor with the preparation of Council's annual budget.
In July 2010, the Lord Mayor asked Adrian to take responsibility for Council's Economic Development Program as part of a Cabinet re-shuffle.
“It was an absolute pleasure to visit Christian Heritage College and meet many of the dedicated staff who support the College and its students,” he said. “They were clearly proud to be working at CHC and there was a real sense that their mission was to make a difference in the lives of their students.
“I am delighted to have such a unique and vital College in the local area.
“Having first met Dr Brian Millis many years ago when he was Principal at Citipointe Christian College (then called Christian Outreach College), I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to watch the CHC community grow from strength to strength under his leadership. I look forward to seeing CHC continue to prosper and the staff and students have my full support.
“I wish the College community all the very best and I hope to visit the College again soon.”
Cr Adrian Schrinner’s qualifications include:
• Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Government) - University of Queensland
• Graduate Certificate in Governance and Public Affairs - University of Queensland

CHC Alumni Reunion
Over 70 attend CHC Alumni & Staff Reunion
Over 70 CHC alumni, staff and Council members enjoyed fellowship and food at the inaugural CHC Alumni & Staff Reunion on 1 November at Rivers Café. Unfortunately, we had to turn away a number of alumni and staff a few days before the event as Rivers Café could not cater to more than 70. We’ll have to find a larger venue next year!
There were a few quizzes relating to our history that both alumni and staff participated in. Principal Brian Millis spoke about recent and upcoming plans relating to CHC’s growth. Friend of CHC Craige Gravestein presented a vision of the potential for CHC's influence across Australia – through business, social sciences, politics, education etc.
There was also lots of time for chatting and connecting. Many people indicated on the night that they wanted to engage with CHC through volunteering, donations, offering employment and work experience, and so on. Thank you to everyone who participated on the night and filled out a CHC Engagement Card.

Ruth Thorne
Q&A with Master of Counselling graduate, Ruth Thorne
Ruth Thorne has completed a Master of Counselling at CHC. Here is a part of her story…
Why did you choose to study at CHC?
I chose to do the Master of Counselling at CHC because I was attracted to the idea of the integration of Christianity with psychological concepts. I had a friend who began the degree, and when I heard about what she was studying I became excited about the possibility of studying again. Where I had been doing volunteer counselling, pastoral care and prayer ministry, I used the Master of Counselling to move my work into the “professional” counselling arena. The degree gave me not only the right qualifications for accreditation with professional bodies, but also the competence and confidence to offer counselling in the professional arena.
Has the course been beneficial to your ministry and career?
My studies at CHC have reconnected me with my love of learning. There is always more to learn, but the Master of Counselling has given me a solid foundation, a well regarded qualification, and sound springboard for future research, counselling and an academic career.
What are you doing these days?
After working in private practice counselling, research and lecturing following completion of the Master of Counselling at CHC in 2008, I decided I wanted the opportunity to conduct my own research and become better equipped to teach. So I enrolled to do a PhD in Counselling at Australian Catholic University. My topic is around ideas about post structural ideas of self and relationship with God. I am getting towards the end of my first year. I see clients in my private practice counselling one day a week. I use narrative ideas as I work with children, adolescents, adults and couples.
I travelled to China and England this year with my husband David, who travels frequently due to his regional responsibilities with United Bible Societies. Being a student again meant I just took my books and notebook with me to study while David was in meetings, and I enjoyed the sights along the way!
I enjoy discussing assignments and study joys and dilemmas with our son who is doing a Master of Divinity in Melbourne, where he is preparing for ministry while parenting four delightful grandchildren alongside his lovely wife. Our other two sons live closer to us, here in Brisbane. Only our poodle keeps us company at home these days.
Study Support
CHC recently employed the services of a Study Support Tutor to assist CHC students in the area of study skills.
Anne Millard (pictured right) says some students need assistance with referencing their work, others want to talk about the assessment task topic, while still others need assistance with grammar and sentence construction.
Anne is generally at CHC every Thursday plus one other day, depending on students’ needs. She says she is flexible with her hours. “I can stay back to meet with students who work during the day,” she says.
Anne can usually be found in the AV room in the Library. Otherwise, ask for her at Reception or at the Library desk. She is also available via email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Dan Rayner wins Scholarship & Community Awards
CHC student Dan Rayner is a busy young man. But he admits it’s all worth it.
His leadership and volunteering activities in his home town of Warwick have won him a few accolades recently. Last year he was presented with the Queensland Young Volunteers Award, a state government initiative that recognises the achievements and contributions of young volunteers aged 12 to 25. In January this year he received a Junior Citizen of the Year award. This year he also won the local Australia Day – Junior Citizen Award.
On top of that, Dan Rayner received a CHC Scholarship earlier this year. He first had to write a letter to CHC outlining how the scholarship would assist his tertiary education.
Why did you apply for the scholarship?
I applied for the scholarship because the criteria was not based on academic achievements but on how it would benefit you and your studies at CHC. I live in Warwick (approx 2 hours away from Brisbane). The scholarship helped me move to Brisbane for university. I also have poor vision (I only have one eye) and I needed some specific vision aides to assist in my tertiary education.
How has the Scholarship benefitted you?
It’s benefitted me in being able to move up to Brisbane and being able to purchase specific equipment to help me with my education and my vision.
Would you encourage others to give financially towards setting up future CHC Scholarships?
Yes, I would. I chose CHC because of its Christian ethos. Unfortunately, because CHC is in Brisbane, for those who want to complete tertiary education at a Christian college like CHC, they have to move away from home to Brisbane to do so. So a CHC Scholarship helps students like me.
Where are they now? Peter & Priscilla Lister
Peter Lister graduated from CHC with a Bachelor of Education (Sec) & Bachelor of Arts in 1997. His wife, Pricilla, also graduated from CHC the same year with a Bachelor of Education (Sec). In fact, they met during their first year at CHC. Here’s their story so far…
What are you both doing these days?
My wife Priscilla (nee Thomson) and I have been teaching at Mackay Christian College for the past 13 years. Priscilla was initially a Primary Teacher and now enjoys the position of Course Advisor for the College. Among other roles in our time at the College, I am currently the Indigenous, Outreach and Year 12 Coordinator. I also enjoy teaching Senior Study of Religion, Indigenous Studies and Missions and Ministry Training. Priscilla and I have also been involved in pioneering Mackay Christian College's Indigenous Outreach Team and it's involvements for the last 8 years throughout the Torres Strait and Aboriginal communities in Cape York, Queensland. In recent years Northside Christian College has also been involved in our program. The teams visit these communities annually.
Why did you choose to study at CHC?
I felt a strong call of God to attend CHC during Year 12. I was headed for a career in Engineering or Sports Medicine until I went to a Missions Conference where I felt God give me a burden for Africa. I applied and was accepted on a working party to help build churches. One night when I was praying, God revealed that He wanted me to build churches with people, not shovels. He directed me to wait till I was equipped. A couple of weeks later I found an advertisement for CHC and knew that's where God wanted me to go.
It has now been 18 years since that revelation and I still haven't gone to Africa! I have had a few opportunities and it looks like our family may go early next year with a team from our College. Each year I know that I am being equipped for every good work that God has in store for us when we eventually go.
Has the course at CHC been beneficial to you?
The course has definitely been beneficial for my ministry calling. I could not have asked for a better foundation and equipping for the ministry of teaching. I treasure that truth that I walk daily with God in my classroom.
Would you recommend CHC to others?
I often recommend CHC to Year 12 students and am really excited to see some graduating there. To me, there is no other alternative if you take ‘teaching as a ministry and calling’ seriously.
Tell us about your family… Priscilla and I met in my first year at CHC and were married at the end of that year. We have been enjoying our journey together for 17 years now and share life with our awesome little 4-year-old boy, Jonah. He is brimming with confidence and loves to share about Jesus on the microphone when we go on outreaches. We love doing outreaches together, camping, boating and riding bikes. Our family is quite multicultural as we became homestay parents for Torres Strait kids that have had to leave their home communities for high school.
Welcome NEW Dean Of Social Science - Dr Johan Roux
New Dean of Social Sciences
Johan Roux is the new Dean of the School of Social Sciences at CHC. Here’s a snapshot of Johan…
What were you doing before you became Dean of Social Sciences at CHC?
My family and I moved to Brisbane from South Africa in January 2008. I then worked for Citipointe Ministry College as Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Ministry degree and oversaw all student matters.
Qualifications?
BA, BD (Theology), MCouns, DTh.
Tell us about the School of Social Sciences…
I see the mission of the School of Social Sciences as dovetailing the mission of CHC itself: Transforming people to transform their world. That’s what we do in Social Sciences. My personal vision and calling (since I was 26) is really the same: to connect exceptionally well, to make people whole and equip them to change their own world.
Tell us about your family…
I’ve been very happily married to my wife, Jacoliene, for 13 years. We have 2 beautiful children. Our daughter is Ruvon (7) and our son is Shian (4).
What do you do when you’re not at CHC?
I love all sports. I’m actively involved in triathlons.
To help us get to know you more, give us your top 10 words…
Shalom, Community/Team, Interlocution (to journey with people in Godly ways), Shibumi (understated excellence), Empowerment, Kingdom of God, Love, (Loving) Relationships, Missions & Servant Leadership
What’s your favourite Scripture?
Luke 4:18 & 19, the whole of Matthew 5-7, Joshua 1:5-9
Amanda Huxham
Why did you choose CHC?
CHC seemed the obvious choice for me. I had completed a Bachelor of Business Management at a secular university before deciding on teaching as a career, and knew I wanted to work in the Christian school system. CHC offered excellent practical experiences in Christian schools as well as the opportunity to grow in faith and learn from Christian lecturers who are passionate about teaching. The lecturers were highly skilled professionals who were dedicated to encouraging students. My worldview was reshaped and I am a much stronger person in Christ now.
Has CHC been beneficial to your career?
Absolutely! As a new graduate I was able to find employment following my practical placement. My education at CHC thoroughly prepared me for the role of a classroom teacher.
Tell us about your family
I have been very happily married to Brenton for 7 years and have been blessed with a little boy, Sam (an energetic 2 ½ -year-old), and daughter Lucy (a more content and still immobile 8-month-old).
Where are you working now?
Some days in the laundry and kitchen and singing along to Sesame Street tunes. Other days provide different challenges as a relief teacher! I am still trying to find the right family/work balance; I have missed full-time teaching since resigning to have Sam, but presently enjoy contracts and relief work. My teaching qualifications have also enabled me to do work from home writing training manuals for university undergraduates. In my spare time I am squeezing in a bit of study for my Masters, but that really is a squeeze at the moment!

Need study support
CHC is delighted to introduce Anne Millard.
Anne is a primary trained teacher, having worked at schools, both State and Christian, in various states around Australia. Her last position was at Calvary Christian College, in Brisbane, where she worked for almost 10 years both as a teacher and Deputy on the Springwood Campus.
Post teaching, her special area of interest lies in working with students in the area of academic communication. She has also recently completed a Diploma in Professional Proofreading and Editing.
Anne says it is her privilege to be able to offer support to students at CHC. At this stage the role is a flexible one, and is designed to meet the needs of individual students or groups as required. Anne’s timetable is quite flexible also, so she can be available at different times, but hopefully will settle to a specific day or two per week as the semester progresses.
Some areas that have been already identified for Anne to assist students in are:
- Effective writing – grammar, essay structure, sentence and paragraph structure
- In-text referencing
- How to unpack a topic – what does the assessment task actually require
- Time management/organisational issues – the assessment plan of attack
- Effective study habits
However, individual needs are a priority and will vary enormously from student to student, so Anne is keen to hear from you regarding the support you require at this time in your academic journey at CHC.
You can contact Anne for an appointment on studysupport@mail.chc.edu.au
Moodle Access
Please note that all students will receive an e-mail (will be send to CHC student e-mail accounts) with their Moodle details on Friday, 23 July.
Will Hart’s Story
How many years have you been a CHC Council member? I have been a Director/Council member at CHC since its inception - almost 25 years ago.
What were you doing before you retired? I was a solicitor in private practice in Brisbane for 41 years prior to retirement in June 2006.
What's the primary reason why you feel Christians should support CHC… I think Christians should have a choice to study in a Christian environment at all levels, including the tertiary level. This obviously requires Christian educational facilities to be available at all levels. These are not provided by Government and it is therefore up to all Christians to do their bit to help - a few Christians cannot bear that responsibility alone. Prayers from the committed are not the full answer.
Why do you support CHC in this way? I hope that my efforts will assist in making it more likely that students will have the choice I mentioned earlier so that they can improve their lives and the lives of those in their community.
Tell us about your family… I married Christine Schollay - originally from East Gippsland - in November 2008. We had both been married before. We are both in our 60's - children for us would be more than a surprise.
I have 2 girls from a previous marriage – Amanda (27) who works for Channel 10 in Canberra and Abby (25) who works for a small media company in Toowong. Christine has 2 children in their 30's and 4 grandchildren.
Do you have a hobby? I play tennis each week and follow the mighty Lions in the AFL. I am an enthusiastic but relatively ineffectual gardener.
Congratulations on your PhD David!
We asked newly-conferred PhD scholar, David Pohlmann, Are chaplaincy services effective in Queensland state schools? “Absolutely!” he declared.
David should know! He coordinates the Chaplaincy and Youth Studies degree programs in CHC’s School of Social Sciences. And he has spent the best part of the last decade investigating the role and effectiveness of chaplains.
His recently-completed PhD thesis draws on his experiences as a former state school teacher, chaplain and teacher educator, along with extensive studies in state schools Australia-wide.
Today David is a recognized expert on the subject of chaplaincy in state schools and is one of the most published academics in his field.
In the course of his doctorate, David developed a new model for effective chaplaincy. “I describe it as the Seven C’s model of state school chaplaincy,” he explained. For more details of David’s insights into the positive influence of chaplaincy in Queensland schools you can download the Executive Summary of his thesis here.

CHC Graduate Helps Launch Halftime in Australia
A Harvard-MetLife study reveals that more than half of us who reach middle age want more meaning and significance in the second half of our lives.
Well, a CHC graduate now helps lead the Australian entity of Halftime, a business ministry based on the highly successful ministry of US-based Bob Buford. Halftime aims to engage successful business leaders, owners and executives to reflect on where they are going… and why.
Seven years ago, Geoff Wass was running his hi-tech laser-cutting business while studying Business at Christian Heritage College. During this period, Geoff’s business literally doubled its revenue and profits soared. This was a remarkable result, given that Geoff invested no additional funds or human resources into the business during that period.
Geoff attributes much of his success to the business skills he learned at CHC. “Once I completed my studies, I totally re-engineered my business, largely as a result of the knowledge I gained at CHC,” he said.
So successful was his invigorated business that in 2005 he was approached by a publicly-listed company that subsequently bought the business. Over the following four years, Geoff stayed on with the Corporation in the role of Business Improvement Manager and worked on a wide variety of projects across Australia.
In September last year, he left to start his own management consultancy. Appropriately trading under the business name “WASSNEXT”, Geoff Wass now specialises in providing consultancy for business systems projects, project management, change management and IT management.
His time at CHC not only helped Geoff to greater business success, it changed his life on many levels.
“Before 2000, I wasn’t even a Christian,” he explains. “Once I became a Christian, I explored options for transferring my children to Christian Outreach College (now Citipointe Christian College), and that’s when I first became aware of the existence of Christian Heritage College.”
Geoff, who had previous engineering qualifications, said it ‘just made sense’ to further his business studies at CHC because of its Christian world-view.
CHC’s unique Christian focus also inspired Geoff to take on a remarkable new life challenge. “The reason I’ve now moved into consultancy is that it allows me to pursue my other passion: helping business owners and executives to discover and lead a life of significance.”
Halftime will be launched nationally in July.

CHC research inspires new community group
Research led by CHC academic David Pohlmann recently made the front page of a local newspaper in Jimboomba (south west of Brisbane). The Jimboomba Times published an extensive article on the formation of a new community association inspired by research conducted by CHC staff and CHC’s Social Sciences undergraduate students.
David and Garth Hentzschel (CHC lecturer and Professional Experience Program Coordinator) had conducted a community development research project in Flagstone, where David once worked as school chaplain.
The outer south west district of Brisbane is a growing residential area with few community resources. The CHC students’ four-year research identified the need for further development of local community identity and harmony.
David said the research provided a unique, hands-on experience for CHC students. It also resulted in a positive, practical outcome. “Earlier this year, we presented our findings at a meeting of residents. We explained that all our research indicated the value of the formation of some kind of community association,” David said.
The residents unanimously agreed with the suggestion, and held their first steering committee at a special community meeting in March. David said the group hoped to form an incorporated association by August.

A CHC scholarships panel will assess each applicant’s submission outlining how a scholarship will help them launch their dream job or ministry. Each scholarship is worth $3,000 over 1 year.
For $4 a day (that’s a $120/month investment across 1 year) you’ll help pay for almost 50% of a LAUNCH YOUR DREAM scholarship.
For $2 a day (that’s a $60/month investment across 1 year) you’ll help pay for almost a quarter of a LAUNCH YOUR DREAM scholarship.

Petra Research Project
Since 2006 CHC academics David Pohlmann and Garth Hentzschel with thirteen social science undergraduate research students from Christian Heritage College have conducted a community development research project in Flagstone (south west of Brisbane). This work was initiated after one of the authors had served as chaplain in a local secondary school.
It was noted early in the study that although Flagstone was becoming a growing residential area, there were insufficient infrastructure resources to adequately support such a suburb. The need for the further development of local community identity and harmony was also something that emerged from the research.
In the four years of this project, new ways of using existing community resources and infrastructure as well as new resources to be sourced have been identified. The project has recently come to the point of helping the local Flagstone community come together within the framework of a community association through which many of these issues may be addressed.
Recent press reports about the community association being formed following this research may be found here.
